Astatotilapia latifasciata, commonly referred to as the Crimson Tide Cichlid or Zebra Obliquidens, is a freshwater fish native to the African Great Lakes, particularly Lake Kyoga and Lake Nawampasa, a smaller lake connected to Lake Kyoga in Uganda. This species is part of the Cichlidae family, which is known for its diversity and the vast number of species within it. The Crimson Tide Cichlid is appreciated in the aquarium hobby for its striking appearance and relatively peaceful temperament compared to some other African cichlids.

Appearance

Astatotilapia latifasciata males display vibrant colors, with bodies that can show a beautiful mix of reds and oranges, accented with vertical barring that can appear more pronounced depending on the fish's mood and environment. Females and juveniles tend to be less colorful, usually showing more muted tones and less distinct barring. Like many cichlids, they also exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males typically being larger and more brightly colored than females.

Size

These cichlids are moderately sized, with adults reaching up to about 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm) in length in an aquarium setting. Their size makes them a suitable choice for a variety of aquarium sizes, although they do best in tanks that allow them ample space to establish territories.

Care and Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a small group of these fish, allowing enough space for territorial behavior and to minimize aggression.
  • Water Parameters: They thrive in water conditions similar to their native habitat—slightly alkaline water with a pH between 7.5 and 8.5, and temperatures in the range of 75-82°F (24-28°C).
  • Decoration: The tank should be decorated with rocks, caves, and driftwood to provide hiding spots and break lines of sight, which helps reduce aggression.
  • Diet: Astatotilapia latifasciata is omnivorous. In the aquarium, they can be fed a variety of foods, including quality cichlid pellets or flakes, frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms, and vegetable matter.

Behavior and Compatibility

These cichlids are relatively peaceful for an African cichlid but can become territorial, especially males. They can be kept with other similarly sized and temperament fish but should not be housed with very aggressive or much larger species. Careful consideration should be given to tank mates and setup to ensure a harmonious environment.

Breeding

Astatotilapia latifasciata are maternal mouthbrooders. The female lays eggs, which are then fertilized by the male. Afterward, she picks up and carries the eggs in her mouth to protect them until they hatch and the fry are ready to swim freely. This process can take about two to three weeks. Breeding them in captivity can be achieved with attention to water quality, diet, and providing an environment that mimics their natural habitat.

Conclusion

The Crimson Tide Cichlid is a captivating species that can add color and activity to a well-maintained aquarium. Their care requirements are moderate, making them suitable for aquarists with some experience, especially those interested in the unique behaviors and breeding practices of African cichlids.
